چکیده

1) Use of the complex wave oscillation method provided a measurement range of over 9 cmH201lls with a resolution of O.18 cmH20/1ls. 2) The respiratory system was expressed as a two-compartment model. By expressing the circuit characteristics as phasor loci, a method was shown whereby individual impedance parameter values could be derived frorn the measured impedance phasor loci. S) Vnder enflurane anesthesia, the model parameter values were derived as Rl = 1.2, R2 = I.6 cmH2011/s, Ci = O.02, C2 = O.0411crnH20 and L = O,e65 cmH20/11s2.

The forced oscillation technique in intubated, mechanically-ventilated patients.

In a recent discussion concerning the use of the forced oscillation technique (FOT), PRIDE [ 1] stated that, although anaesthesia and intensive care are among the obvious areas of application of the method, there is very little information on these applications. The paper by PEsuN et al. [2] in the present issue of the Journal describes one of the first attempts to apply the FOT to mechanically...

Emergent behavior of regional heterogeneity in the lung and its effects on respiratory impedance.

The ability to maintain adequate gas exchange depends on the relatively homogeneous distribution of inhaled gas throughout the lung. Structural alterations associated with many respiratory diseases may significantly depress this function during tidal breathing. These alterations frequently occur in a heterogeneous manner due to complex, emergent interactions among the many constitutive elements...

Exploring respiratory mechanics by forced oscillations: principles and pitfalls.

Submitting a physical system to forced oscillations is a very general approach to investigation of its structure and/or properties. Its application to respiratory mechanics was first proposed by DuBors et al. in 1956 [1], but it has also been used in other fields of respiratory physiology, e.g. to investigate the control of breathing and the response to exercise. As used in respiratory mechanic...

Scanning impedance microscopy (SIM): A novel approach for AC transport imaging

Scanning Impedance Microscopy (SIM) is one of the novel scanning probe microscopy (SPM) techniques, which has been developed to taking image from sample surface, providing quantitative information with high lateral resolution on the interface capacitance, and investigating the local capacitance–voltage (C–V) behavior of the interface and AC transport properties. The SIM is an ordinary AFM equip...

Respiratory mechanics studied by forced oscillations during artificial ventilation.

Potential advantages of the forced oscillation technique over other methods for monitoring total respiratory mechanics during artificial ventilation are that it does not require patient relaxation, and that additional information may be derived from the frequency dependence of the real (Re) and imaginary (Im) parts of respiratory impedance. We wanted to assess feasibility and usefulness of the ...
